Caring For Your Decking Installations - The Easy Way.

Keeping your outdoor decking installations clean is the best way to reduce maintenance costs and look after your investment.

If you plan to have your deck installations around for the next 25 years or so - cleaning your decking now and then will negate any costly maintenance bills later. The upkeep of your decking installation should not prove to be too much of a chore if you clean regularly and apply the required decking treatment such as urethane deck coating.

Pre-cleaning your decking installations in this manner enables you to use less pressure when pressure washing and prevent any damage through excess pressure in localized areas where stains are most prevalent.

In general, on the majority of decking installations any dirt and debris that lodge between the deck boards prevent water from draining away and may cause areas to rot prematurely and encourage mildew. In order to get rid of this debris, pressure-wash the deck area using a cold-water pressure cleaner. The pressure you'll need for deck cleaning is 1500 pounds per square inch (PSI) using a 25º angle nozzle or tip which is ideal for deck power washing. Do not use hot water.

Caution: The nozzle or tip should always be kept in motion when close to the wood, especially when cleaning softwood decking installations. Keeping the high pressure spray in one place for any length of time will damage the wood fibres.

Once you have finished pressure washing your decking installation, leave the deck to dry for at least 24 hours before applying any decking preserver, such as a urethane deck coating or other such decking material waterproof treatment. Follow the instructions of the particular product that you use locally for best results. Pay special attention to any covered porch decking materials that may also require specialist treatment, such as slates, sheathing or wood .

Whatever your deck railing choices, these too must also be kept clean using the appropriate cleaning materials. Do not forget these items as they too can become shabby and lack lustre. Always adhere to the deck railing manufacturer's instructions especially where glass and aluminium are concerned.

Wood decking installations are no more labour intensive to maintain than the avarage garden, a little TLC every now and then will save you a great deal of time and money.
